Characteristics of the Production of Pharmaceutical Intermediates in China

2025-12-19

Looking at the industry as a whole, China’s pharmaceutical intermediate production currently exhibits six major characteristics:

First, most of the manufacturing enterprises are privately owned, with flexible operations and relatively small investment scales—generally ranging from several million to around ten million yuan.

Second, the geographical distribution of manufacturing enterprises is relatively concentrated, primarily centered around Taizhou in Zhejiang and Jintan in Jiangsu.

Third, as the country increasingly emphasizes environmental protection issues, manufacturing enterprises are facing growing pressure to build environmentally friendly treatment facilities.

Fourth, products are updated at a rapid pace. Typically, after a product has been on the market for 3 to 5 years, its profit margins begin to decline significantly, forcing companies to continuously develop new products or constantly improve production processes in order to maintain high production profits.

Fifth, since the profit margins for pharmaceutical intermediates are higher than those for chemical products, and given that the production processes for both are essentially similar, an increasing number of small-scale chemical enterprises have entered the pharmaceutical intermediate production sector, leading to increasingly fierce and disorderly competition within the industry.

Sixth, compared to active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), the profit margins for intermediate products are relatively low. Moreover, the production processes for APIs and pharmaceutical intermediates are quite similar. As a result, some companies have gone beyond merely producing intermediates and are now leveraging their own strengths to start manufacturing APIs as well.
